Race in America

Reimagine Race

Building Inclusive Workplaces with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

The American experiment thrives on a diverse tapestry of cultures and experiences. Yet, traditional notions of race often limit our understanding of what true Diversity encompasses.

This page explores the limitations of race as a sole measure of Diversity and offers a framework for building truly inclusive workplaces through Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA).

The Power to Change an Outdated Social Construct

America is a social experiment. It is the first country to design its social structure via a unique collage of different people with the freedom to pursue life, liberty, and happiness.

Race is a human invention dating back to the 1500s, when philosophers advanced the false notion that White people were smarter and more capable than nonwhite individuals. This justified European colonization and enslavement, resulting in skin color and physical features determining who could access education and resources.

Race in America no longer fits those categories. And since race is a human concept, we have the power to change it.

Here’s what you can do.

Stop Counting the Wrong Stuff

Counting representation by race dates to slavery. Race deserves to be celebrated; not ignored or reduced to a checkbox. Beyond the numbers, how deep does your Diversity go? A team with similar socioeconomic, educational, religious, and racial backgrounds fosters homogeneity, stifling creativity and fresh perspectives.

Redefine Race and Diversity

We operate in a Knowledge + Experience Economy. People define themselves differently today, sometimes by more than one identity. Think about how you can quantify someone's experience and/or describe an individual using multiple characteristics. It can help you capture the incredible potential of your ENTIRE workforce and become more inclusive.

Distinguish Unison and Unity

Belonging to a certain race does not make someone part of a monolithic cohort. Each person deserves to be empowered and valued as they work towards common organizational goals. Everyone brings rich experiences, backgrounds, and ideas.

Take Action and Lead

Your industry needs your vision, insight, and experience to help it serve a pivotal role in the next generation workplace and marketplace. Partner with the Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)® now to build a sustainable model for inclusive excellence.

Embrace the Full Spectrum of Diversity

The American workforce is rapidly changing. A 2022 Pew Research Center study found that millennials and Gen Z are the most racially and ethnically diverse generations in U.S. history.

This trend is only accelerating and presents a tremendous opportunity for organizations… if they can effectively leverage the unique talents of a diverse workforce.

Beyond race, consider the rich tapestry of experiences that define people:

  • Socioeconomic background
  • Education
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Thinking styles

This broader definition empowers you to cultivate a culture of belonging.

What Does Diversity Look Like?

The Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)® employs a much deeper definition of Diversity. We believe in fostering a culture of belonging using a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) lens.

Diversity

Race, ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic, sexual orientation, thinking styles, and more. Diverse teams bring a wealth of experiences, leading to greater innovation and problem-solving.

Equity

Everyone has a fair shot at success. This means creating a level playing field where all employees have access to opportunities for development and advancement.

Inclusion

Every voice is valued and heard. An inclusive workplace fosters a sense of belonging and psychological safety where everyone feels comfortable contributing their ideas.

Accessibility

Ensuring everyone has the tools and resources they need to succeed. This includes physical accommodations, flexible work arrangements, and assistive technology.
