A Proven Process for Inclusive Excellence
Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® Credentials for executives and DEIA leaders responsible for setting the vision and strategy for their organizations
Anyone can claim to be a DEIA expert. But a growing number of organizations want proof of inclusive excellence before spending budget on programming or facing public humiliation for discrimination, harassment, or other inequities. Diversity and Inclusion certification can help set you apart.
The Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)®'s Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® credential is the
gold standard for organizational executives and DEI leaders. Designed for senior executives who are responsible for managing or overseeing large scale and/or complex strategic efforts, a CDE® can help their organization
remove
systemic barriers to equity, align
enterprise-wide strategies for inclusion, lead
culture change, and transform the
brand.
A Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® is a knowledgeable and skilled executive who manages or oversees large scale and/or complex Diversity and Inclusion efforts at any type of employer or as a consultant. The CDE® may apply advanced DEIA insights to industry trends, stakeholder engagement activities, and research and development efforts, to name a few.
Using a business process transformation approach, the CDE® works to advance the organization beyond representation, towards thought leadership and enterprise risk management. The CDE® champions organizational values; models belonging and inclusive excellence; fosters a safe and healthy work culture; and/or leads enterprise-wide integration efforts. The level of learning is advanced.
Employees expect their leadership teams to lead by example, including diversity and inclusion initiatives. As such, a CDE® may be any executive in an organization; the certification is not restricted Diversity and Inclusion officers.
The rigorous CDE® qualification assures the public, employers, and colleagues that you have the knowledge, skills, and ability to thrive in the next generation of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility work.
A Candidate is pursuing certification. A Designee has successfully achieved a Certified Diversity Professional (CDP)® or Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® designation. A CDP® Designee can become a Candidate again if pursuing the CDE®, which supersedes and replaces the CDP®.
The Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® credential challenges conventional Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) work, and reinforces the need for organizations to lead inclusion from the top. Developed for DEIA leaders and organizational executives, the CDE® enables you to champion organizational values; model belonging and inclusive excellence; foster a safe and healthy work culture; and/or lead enterprise-wide integration efforts. The level of learning is advanced.
Required:
CDE® experience includes professional experience being directly accountable for DEIA, planning, operations, talent management, finances, legal/risk management, marketing/sales, and technology. The work may consist of administration, on-the-job training, past employment performance, or other senior-level knowledge and responsibilities within an organization.
A current leadership role includes those who have terminated employment within the last six (6) months. Candidates may serve on a board; oversee a company or organization; manage a division or department; lead a resource group or diversity council; or work in any other decision-making capacity. Additionally, the individual may or may not have direct reports.
55% of CDP® and CDE® Designees reported a promotion or new position
Half of CDP® and CDE® Designees report receiving a raise or bonus
46% of CDP® and CDE® Designees report leading a new DEIA initiative

Since the 2023 curriculum alignment with IDC's Job Task Analysis (JTA), IDC created the Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® Examination Blueprints and Specifications. The blueprint emphasizes the process of execution and achieving intentional Diversity and Inclusion results on the job.
Domain and Competency
Skills Mastery
Performance Indicator
Over the years, senior executives and DEI leaders noted that execution can be challenging, especially demonstrating a scalable, methodical. In IDC's blueprint, the link between execution and performance is skills mastery.
There are 4 skills mastery levels:
Varying levels of mastery within each competency is expected.
Dive deeper into each domain in the Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® – Content Outline.
Note: These knowledge areas and the overall passing score may change based upon a new job task analysis, which occurs every 3-5 years.
Personal awareness, authentic leadership, and the ability to manage critical vulnerabilities are essential traits for influential 21st-century leaders. The CDE® is self-aware and committed to lifelong learning, which enables them to lead with empathy.
As organizations look to the future, improving one’s approach to the bottom line encompasses multiple components of sustainability. Also, leaders can effectively secure stakeholder buy-in and resources by understanding DEIA's business case.
Leadership in the DEIA space is complex, especially in large organizations. Mastering this competency allows executives to develop formal frameworks that advance DEIA work while navigating competing dynamics and priorities.
Understanding the unique needs of a diverse workforce helps executives correct practices that prevent inclusive recruitment and retention strategies. The CDE® helps create a pipeline of future leaders and ensures equitable opportunities for all.
An inclusive environment is intentionally designed, nurtured, and supported. DEIA leaders learn to operate a best-in-class effort that fosters equity, defines inclusive excellence, and achieves a discrimination- and harassment-free work environment.
Diversity leaders are challenged to confront age old assumptions about unconscious bias. This competency identifies implicit associations that lead to discrimination, inequality, and exclusion and presents effective techniques to overcome stereotypes and biases.
Constructing a quality board is about the caliber and perspective of individual directors and a group dynamic that allows for effective execution of strategic organizational oversight. Designed to ensure a pipeline of diverse board candidates, this competency helps improve policies and decision-making at the board level.
Small business owners have the potential to be the lifeblood of the economy. An inclusive supply chain strategy that supports minority- and women-owned businesses may solve mission-critical problems and contribute to local economic development.
Global business activity continues to bridge international cultures. DEIA leaders understand the challenges of cultural integration and how to overcome them, positioning them to counsel leadership about potential problems and opportunities.
DEIA leaders play a critical role in driving innovation at their organizations. Fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity of thought can lead to the development of new and innovative products, services, and processes.
Diversity should benefit all people, not just marginalized groups. This competency presents alternatives to an outdated social and power construct in the workplace and encourages all parties to engage in a culture that is becoming increasingly diverse.
Creating a culture that values and advances DEIA starts at the top. The CDE® learns to identify and cultivate executive sponsors, or senior leadership, who help advocate for inclusive initiatives and remove barriers to change.
Diversity leaders align their work with the organization's strategy by identifying the key areas where DEIA can have the biggest impact on success. They also partner with other internal departments and teams, as well as external enterprises that can help extend the organization's reach and impact.
Demographic shifts have a major impact on the workforce and marketplace. Diversity leaders analyze demographic data to develop effective DEIA strategies for service delivery, talent management, marketing, communications, competitive positioning, and more.
DEIA leaders need to be prepared to adapt their strategies to meet the needs of the changing workforce and marketplace. This competency helps leaders evaluate how DEIA efforts have evolved and prepares the organization to adopt forward-thinking practices and strategies.
Collecting data or sharing research reports is not enough. DEIA executives must provide insight into how the data will impact the organization now and in the future. Beyond assumptions or opinions, data allows the organization to benchmark its people, policies, and practices against competitors and other best-in-class enterprises.

I became a Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® in 2021. The learning process exceeded principles and perceptions I had long held regarding the far-reaching impact of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
My certification has increased my capital as a subject matter expert on Diversity and earned me the respect of skeptical coworkers and community partners.
Three years ago, I was looking to expand my professional knowledge in DEI and found this cutting-edge organization. I started with the Certified Diversity Professional (CDP)® course and felt well-prepared for the exam. What do you need to pass the Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® exam? And to effectively lead Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) for your organization?
The Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)® prepares you to be successful leaders and Diversity and Inclusion efforts in your workplace. Our qualitative and quantitative program will equip you to drive consistent, measurable results.
The CDE® exam is a rigorous test of your knowledge and skills in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. In order to pass the exam and be successful in the C-suite, you need a full understanding of DEI, including the legal and regulatory environment, the business case, principles and practices, implementation tools and techniques, and how to evaluate and measure.
The assessment process consists of two components;
Candidates must pass both portions. Knowledge, skills, and abilities will be assessed through
an exam and
a peer-reviewed Candidate Project. Candidates have
one year from the date of registration to pass both portions of the exam in the
CourseNetworking Learning Management System (the CN).
A peer-reviewed Candidate Project, evaluated for thoroughness, accuracy, and impact
100 multiple-choice question examination within a 2.5 hour time limit
The Candidate Project demonstrates you have the knowledge to do the work. Beyond understanding the mechanics of DEIA, the professional work indicates that you are also competent in creating Diversity and Inclusion tools that can enhance your effectiveness on the job.
Candidates have one calendar year from the date of registration to complete the full program, but IDC recommends submitting the project before the exam.
While it must be the candidate's own work, group projects are permitted as long as they note the group's members and how each contributed.
Projects are peer-reviewed by current Designees and evaluated for thoroughness, accuracy, and impact per the CDE® Candidate Project Blueprint.
Four factors are assessed with a rubric:
Realistic
Possessing a practical and/or accurate idea of what can be accomplished
Intentional
Devising and executing a relevant, sustainable DEI strategy or initiative that achieves deliberate results over time
Usable
Provides insight into data, policies, practices ,and processes; executes plans/projects systematically; analyzes via a culture audit, focus group, etc.; and/or methodically integrates DEIA practices for the organization's benefit
Meaningful
The capacity to determine the quantity, quality, and/or value of DEI efforts; the ability to assess, measure, and compare the organization and its culture using established data with the intent of making a positive impact
Adhering to the Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® Examination Blueprints and Specifications, the computer-based examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions that must be answered within a 2.5 hour (150 minutes) time limit. Each question has four possible options listed, but only one answer is correct. All of the questions are scored; skipping questions is not advised. Candidates must complete each Domain before moving onto the next section.
All Candidates receive access to an online tutorial that summarizes what will be on the test.
The CDE® exam is a high-stakes, proctored assessment. You can take the exam in person at an authorized testing center or if you are a member of a group, IDC will provide proctors for up to 10 employees per exam session. The test is not an open-book exam.
A passing score is 74.0% or greater.
The CDE® exam is a rigorous test of your knowledge, skills, and abilities in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). What do you need to pass? And to do the job effectively?
In order to succeed at the exam and the job, you need to have a strong foundation in Diversity and Inclusion concepts. This includes understanding the different types of discrimination and the best practices for creating a more inclusive workplace.
Exam preparation can occur through professional experiences, college certificate or graduate programs, and other educational offerings. IDC’s preparatory course and/or materials are NOT a requirement for this examination or certification. IDC's materials are not the only method to prepare for the certification exam.

online tutorial that summarizes what will be on the test. The
exam fee includes the test and online tutorial only; it
does
not
include the study guide. IDC assumes that you prepared elsewhere or during a previous IDC exam cycle.
