CDE® Certification
Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® Credentials for executives and DEIA leaders responsible for setting the vision and strategy for their organizations
CDE® Program Introduction
Anyone can claim to be a DEIA expert. But a growing number of organizations want proof of inclusive excellence before spending budget on programming or facing public humiliation for discrimination, harassment, or other inequities. Diversity and Inclusion certification can help set you apart.
The Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)®'s Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® credential is the
gold standard for organizational executives and DEI leaders. Designed for senior executives who are responsible for managing or overseeing large scale and/or complex strategic efforts, a CDE® can help their organization
remove
systemic barriers to equity, align
enterprise-wide strategies for inclusion, lead
culture change, and transform the
brand.
What is a Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)®?
A Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® is a knowledgeable and skilled executive who manages or oversees large scale and/or complex Diversity and Inclusion efforts at any type of employer or as a consultant. The CDE® may apply advanced DEIA insights to industry trends, stakeholder engagement activities, and research and development efforts, to name a few.
Using a business process transformation approach, the CDE® works to advance the organization beyond representation, towards thought leadership and enterprise risk management. The CDE® champions organizational values; models belonging and inclusive excellence; fosters a safe and healthy work culture; and/or leads enterprise-wide integration efforts. The level of learning is advanced.
Employees expect their leadership teams to lead by example, including diversity and inclusion initiatives. As such, a CDE® may be any executive in an organization; the certification is not restricted Diversity and Inclusion officers.
The rigorous CDE® qualification assures the public, employers, and colleagues that you have the knowledge, skills, and ability to thrive in the next generation of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility work.
CDE® Candidate v. Designee
A Candidate is pursuing certification. A Designee has successfully achieved a Certified Diversity Professional (CDP)® or Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® designation. A CDP® Designee can become a Candidate again if pursuing the CDE®, which supersedes and replaces the CDP®.
CDE® Eligibility
The Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® credential challenges conventional Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) work, and reinforces the need for organizations to lead inclusion from the top. Developed for DEIA leaders and organizational executives, the CDE® enables you to champion organizational values; model belonging and inclusive excellence; foster a safe and healthy work culture; and/or lead enterprise-wide integration efforts. The level of learning is advanced.

What CDE® Designees Say
CDE® Assessment
What do you need to pass the Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® exam? And to effectively lead Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) for your organization?
The Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)® prepares you to be successful leaders and Diversity and Inclusion efforts in your workplace. Our qualitative and quantitative program will equip you to drive consistent, measurable results.
The CDE® exam is a rigorous test of your knowledge and skills in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. In order to pass the exam and be successful in the C-suite, you need a full understanding of DEI, including the legal and regulatory environment, the business case, principles and practices, implementation tools and techniques, and how to evaluate and measure.
The assessment process consists of two components;
Candidates must pass both portions. Knowledge, skills, and abilities will be assessed through
an exam and
a peer-reviewed Candidate Project. Candidates have
one year from the date of registration to pass both portions of the exam in the
CourseNetworking Learning Management System (the CN).
A peer-reviewed Candidate Project, evaluated for thoroughness, accuracy, and impact
100 multiple-choice question examination within a 2.5 hour time limit
CDE® Candidate Project
The Candidate Project demonstrates you have the knowledge to do the work. Beyond understanding the mechanics of DEIA, the professional work indicates that you are also competent in creating Diversity and Inclusion tools that can enhance your effectiveness on the job.
Candidates have one calendar year from the date of registration to complete the full program, but IDC recommends submitting the project before the exam.
While it must be the candidate's own work, group projects are permitted as long as they note the group's members and how each contributed.
Projects are peer-reviewed by current Designees and evaluated for thoroughness, accuracy, and impact per the CDE® Candidate Project Blueprint.
Four factors are assessed with a rubric:
Realistic
Possessing a practical and/or accurate idea of what can be accomplished
Intentional
Devising and executing a relevant, sustainable DEI strategy or initiative that achieves deliberate results over time
Usable
Provides insight into data, policies, practices ,and processes; executes plans/projects systematically; analyzes via a culture audit, focus group, etc.; and/or methodically integrates DEIA practices for the organization's benefit
Meaningful
The capacity to determine the quantity, quality, and/or value of DEI efforts; the ability to assess, measure, and compare the organization and its culture using established data with the intent of making a positive impact
CDE® Exam
Adhering to the Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)® Examination Blueprints and Specifications, the computer-based examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions that must be answered within a 2.5 hour (150 minutes) time limit. Each question has four possible options listed, but only one answer is correct. All of the questions are scored; skipping questions is not advised. Candidates must complete each Domain before moving onto the next section.
All Candidates receive access to an online tutorial that summarizes what will be on the test.
The CDE® exam is a high-stakes, proctored assessment. You can take the exam in person at an authorized testing center or if you are a member of a group, IDC will provide proctors for up to 10 employees per exam session. The test is not an open-book exam.
A passing score is 74.0% or greater.
